Last month Gaming Bus reported on Diablo III extended Beta and release for early 2012. Now, Blizzard has decided to do something a little unconventional: from the battle.net website, they are now offering beta keys in a sweepstakes through Facebook. The details are as follows:
Starting October 17, we’ll be randomly selecting 200 winners each week to receive a key to our exclusive Diablo III beta test. In addition, every fourth winner chosen will receive a second key to share with a friend! Drawings will occur every Monday for eight weeks for a total 2,000 keys.
The Facebook page for the sweepstakes can be found here.
Analysis: I decided to go through this process to see what it involved. Who knows? I might want to buy it after I try the beta, but the odds on that are pretty slim, I think. Aside from giving Blizzard access to your information via Facebook, it requires one to enter all that basic information again. That’s about the only annoying thing with it, but it was effortless and took less than 5 minutes to do.
There is only one thing I can conclude as to why they are doing this, and that is, they need to put a load on Battle.net servers and see how much it can handle with the engine and net code. Let’s face it: Starcraft 2 doesn’t put that much a load on the server because it isn’t running a persistent world, but Diablo III is. The fact they decided to delay and expand the beta is good for those interested or those who are on the fence about Diablo III. This gives everyone a chance to join in on the Diablo III beta—if you enter the sweepstakes before time runs out, of course.
