Welcome to another edition of the Gaming Bus Live Stream. Last week, we had a pretty good run at Borderlands as I learned to play the game and gained some levels, only to watch as Josh gained three levels without so much as firing a shot.
Tonight, we go with an obscure title for the Game Boy Colour. Because the game was a platformer in 2002 on a dying system, it slipped under the radar despite its reported high quality. A lot of people slept on Shantae when it first came out despite that it was a Capcom game before Capcom sucked and that it was a well received game. 2D platformers weren’t popular in 2002: they had yet to become so retro that it became chic to pretend it was 1988 again; so while Shantae faded away, a small yet vocal group of gamers made it clear that we were missing a gem. Enough people made noise that developer WayForward—more famous for their work on Contra 4, the Boy and His Blob remake, and the criminally underrated Looney Tunes: Duck Amuck—self-published a sequel, Risky’s Revenge, for DSiWare.
Tonight will be my first exposure to Shantae, so it’ll be intersting to see just how badly I play. Most notable is the fact that I start a new RPG chat, likely on Saturday. The new game, after I beat Tales of Phantasia, is Live a Live for the Super Famicom. Hope to see everyone for Shantae tonight at 9:30PM EST!
